5 Things to Do to Get your Morning off to a Better Start
Every gentleman should begin each and every day with the very best intentions. These simple daily routines should start your day off on the right foot so to speak. We can’t guarantee they’ll get you the job promotion you deserve or the girl...but they surely will point you in the right direction.
1. Make your Bed
Navy Admiral William H McRaven wrote that in his first years of service that ‘Every morning, we would have to make our beds. If the task wasn’t done properly, we would be sent on a 10-mile run. Making my bed taught me the importance of getting my day off to a good start. Years later, when we finally captured Saddam Hussein in Iraq, I was intrigued to notice that he had never made his bed. It’s that kind of laziness that can lead to the downfall of any dictator.’ How you tackle any small task even one like making your bed, shows how you tackle just about everything else. So, pull up your socks...and your bed sheets.
Side note: I promise I’m not being sponsored to write this by a whole host of disgruntled mothers to teenage sons.
2. Drink a Glass of Water first thing
Thousands have lived without love, not one without water– W.H. Auden.
There are plenty of more interesting things to do in the morning than drink a glass of water, but just think what more energy, less toxins and weight loss attributed to this small habit could do to your love life. And sorry gents, your morning cup of coffee doesn’t count.
3. Change your Alarm Tone
Before the invention of the alarm clock in 1787, people had to be creative about how to wake up in time in the morning. According to Stanley Vestal’s 1984 book, Warpath: The True Story of the Fighting Sioux Told in a Biography of Chief White Bull, “Indian warriors could determine in advance their hour of rising by regulating the amount of water drunk before going to bed.” Later, Knocker uppers would roam the streets, particularly common during the Industrial revolution as clocks were at that time far more expensive than using their services. But who woke up the knocker uppers? Now that indeed is as mysterious as for why the iPhone’s ‘Alarm’ standard ringtone is so heinous. Change your ringtone to relieve the stress caused by a harsher sound which triggers a physiological stress response and you’ll soon find you’re getting out of bed with an extra spring in your step.
4. Wake Up with Time to Spare
Now, this tip is perhaps is the most unpleasant of all, aside from those chronically untidy who loathe making their bed. In love-making, a gentleman should always take his time. But there is only one time when you should come early and I am, of course, referring to waking up. Mark Twain once said, ‘The secret of getting ahead is getting started.’
5. Shine Your Shoes
Don’t judge a book by its cover. But always judge a man on his shoes. When we meet someone for the first time, our unconscious mind unwittingly connects and constructs whatever objective data we have from previous experience, to fill in the blanks. From the first million years of human existence, this capability was an important survival instinct. Factors such as a person’s body language, tone of voice and in modern times, style, is taken into subliminal consideration so we can make an ‘educated’ guess on what sort of person we are encountering. On first impression, shoes are often said to be one of the first things a person looks at. Therefore, it stands to reason that you should, at the very least, keep your shoes shined.
Here’s to good health, good principles and above all, good shoes!
